Dr. JoséAlberto Betances

Pediatrician, Named in “Best Doctors in America”

Dr. JoséAlberto Betances, MD graduated from Amherst College with a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and earned his medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in his hometown of the Bronx, N.Y. He completed his residency in Social Pediatrics at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore.

He has held various positions since his residency in 2005. Most recently, he has been at Atrius Health/Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates in Cambridge since 2014, where he served as a pediatrician and Chief for Pediatrics. Before that, he practiced as a staff pediatrician and Division Chief of Primary Care Pediatrics at Boston Medical Center and taught at Boston University School of Medicine. He was named to “Best Doctors in America” for three years in a row.

“While I am very comfortable with current evidence-based practices to care, it is also important to understand how culture and one’s life experience influence health.  During a typical visit, we are always going to talk about the things that are important to the child and parent alike, taking into consideration each family’s unique qualities, and blending that into our care plans. Most importantly, we are going to have fun while doing it!”

I love the diversity of the patients in this community, both socio-economically and culturally. I grew up in the Bronx, NY and my family came from the Dominican Republic. My wife and her family are from Cape Verde. So, I grew up around a diverse group of people, and have always practiced with very diverse people.  I always say, I am not a pediatrician who works in a community – I am a member of this community who happens to be a pediatrician.

With his extensive background in pediatric care, he recognizes that families benefit from the total healthcare (mind and body) approach to health offered by HD Pediatrics.

“It has long been evident that behavioral health should be incorporated into the pediatric health model, so I was very interested in joining a practice which is founded on that concept. As a pediatrician, I come across a lot of challenges with which I have experience, but it’s very helpful to have a staff that can handle the areas in which we are not an expert, like mental health.”

“It used to be a taboo, not discussed even with your doctor, but not only will we make behavioral health questions part of every visit, we’ll have someone right here to bring in and provide support. Many practices in smaller communities don’t have that luxury. HD is doing well by making mental health a foundation of the practice. It’s really living up to what we aspire to — to be a medical home for families.”
